arabia, stanza

this weekend E and I watched Lawrence of Arabia (in two parts, i have to confess) as part of our pre-Jordan/Lebanon movie fest. dorky, i know.  previously we watched indiana jones and the last crusade. i had forgotten how pseudo gruesome some of the scenes in those movies are. in any case, i expected to like it more. was it built up too much in my mind? do i only like epics if they involve michael mann, pacino and de niro? which reminds me, I wasn’t a huge fan of dr. zhivago, either. my attention span must be shortening.

a week or so ago, lacking enthusiasm to finish Guns Germs and Steel, I started re-reading the David Edding’s series on Stanza on my iPhone. I guess I was looking for something light and engaging. And I had heard it’s one of the more popular e-book readers and was curious how bad it would be reading a book on my phone. Not bad at all it turns out. I think it might have something to do with the books being easy to read, engaging, and that I was taking the bus the past week to rest my arm, but all in all, I’m impressed.

What’s so great about it? Really just that you can keep N books on your phone, you don’t need to remember your page or keep a bookmark, it fits in your pocket, and it’s difficult for people to see that you’re reading a fluffy fantasy series. besides that, i suppose paper books are superior. but i’m almost finished with the fourth book in the series, all read on the phone, so the proof is in the pudding. color me surprised.

I haven’t seen Lawrence, but Zhivago drove me nuts. Mainly the music: I know “Lara’s Theme” was a big hit and it is a pretty melody, but in the (very long) movie it seems to pop up every 5 minutes, in a syrupy, over-done arrangement. The book was a lot better, and not just because it didn’t come with a soundtrack.
