fruits of labor

almost forgot to post a picture (thanks sean). so here it is. my cat carrier toolbox.

Sydney in toolbox

like i said, not too fancy, but it should make me feel less silly when bringing my tools (not that I have very many to feel silly about) to and from the woodworking class. it’s a pretty straightforward design, but we ended up using the table saw a bunch, the drill press, jointer, planer, and even a plug cutter. next up: spice rack, and then hopefully some speaker stand/bookshelf hybrid things.

man watching crows, telephoto plans, woodworking

left ‘work’ a bit earlier than usual yesterday to try to use the new tripod and take some pictures. I headed up to gas works park and took some shots of downtown, capitol hill, and the surrounding area. pictures forthcoming on flickr. Which reminds me, i really ought to mention it here when i post it there. Anyway, while taking those pictures, i came to two realizations.

  1. it’s time for a new lens. lots of nice telephoto shots to be had, esp. when a) looking at downtown and b) looking at the moon, which, incidentally, looked fantastic rising above I-5. Full, orange, and tasty looking.
  2. the guy talking to people on top of the hill doesn’t know the people he’s talking to. He was interested in the crows that fly from the northwest to the southeast, almost directly over gas works park in the last hour before sunset. He was trying to figure out where they were going , and we talked for a bit, once he had finished talking to the other people on the hill, about crows and the nicknames of seattle buildings (the penis building, the pencil, the darth vader building, etc.) I couldn’t help but think, ‘he’s just talkative enough to work from home.”

Tonight S and I completed our ‘tool boxen’ in woodworking and I started putting a spice shelf together. It’ll go over the stove and hopefully not burst into flames when it gets hot and we cook with grease. It’ll be made from walnut and have two shelves. It’s utterly unambitious. S is building a small japanese style coffee table. It’s pretty but uses more wood (walnut too) and I’m still feeling like i ought to hone my skills before undertaking something large. what I really want to do is build bookshelf-type stands for my speakers (they’re sitting on the floor now), but I haven’t quite come up with what I think is a good design yet.

winter sports

E, S, E and I drove out to Steven’s Pass (i’m not usually one for static backgrounds, but i think they nailed it) yesterday for some skiing and snowboarding action. Not having gone skiing (has it really been so long?) since the end of high school, I was worried my skiing skills had deteriorated to the point where I would be relegated to the bunny hill. Lucky for me, I’ve retained some modicum of basic skiing ability.

I wasn’t just worried about my skills, though - i was also worried about the gear. My parents graciously brought my skiis out to Claremont, CA where we spent Christmas, but I had forgotten to ask for my gloves and goggles. What to do? A visit to REI had me trying to determine the difference between a $50 and $75 pair. The little voice helpfully advised me, “you have horrible circulation in your hands. buy the warmest things you can find!” I told it about REI’s return policy, and bought the cheaper pair. So what did I find in my dresser the night before the trip? The amazing Pearl Izumi lobster gloves I got for winter biking last year. Those puppies are so heavily insulated, my hands would start sweating before I made it to work. Sweet. I can’t even remember what gloves I own. That’s what a Seattle winter will do for you.

My goal: go skiing once more. Yeah. I’m setting the bar low for now, but anything could happen. Apparently the ski season lasts through April.
