i’ll admit. i got excited enough about all the features listed in emacs’ wikipedia entry that i decided to try it. “it’s probably worth learning, just for the ability to play pong or tetris on a unix system,” i reasoned with k… but it looks like i’ll have to pull down a vim macro do to the same thing, because it doesn’t run on my system:
Lisp backtrace follows:

about an hour. the single-speed presents some extra issues, and it’s time i bought a powerlink to make the process easier, but in general it’s hard to get too frustrated when you have a beer in one hand and are leaning on a bicycle stand with the other. (if i hadn’t almost ruined my chain, things might have gone faster). the phone call from team ellsenheimer got me pointed in the right direction too.
the new theme on my website looks great. kind of wish i had designed it, but what are you going to do? maybe in a month or so (when the weather gets cold and i buy a heated mouse/keyboard) i’ll put some more of my own spin on it. for now, and for post-modernity, there’s the picture of me looking at my own website).
the annual trip to REI (not that there’s only one trip per year, but there’s one big trip per year with the sole purpose of staying warm on the work-commute) went well. smart wool, lobster gloves and an underarmor head/face/neck mask are the new items this year. more lights (brighter, and for the new bike) too. now that i’ve got the mtb bike/single speed, it seems more appropriate to wear jeans. the cross-country ski pants will surely come in handy later in the winter.
k and i spent yesterday cleaning up the apartmont. the servers are now upstairs (where they belong in the winter) keeping us warm, instead of in their summer locale, down in the basement. the test-page we printed last summer is back on the wall, and we’ve ditched the kvm (why all the detail, david? for google. for google.)
todo list:
- put clothes hooks in wall
- order prints for the frames sitting by radiator
- finish (at least) roald dahl, douglas hofsteader, earnest hemingway books in posession.
- buy these whenever they become available
Here’s how i write emails to friends i haven’t heard of for some time:
things here are going well. not too much is new. i’ve been spending a lot of time riding my bike, washing dishes, reading books, changing flats, cleaning the apartmont, dodging the grey cats-who-live-in-my-life’s tails (sabine and bean) before they take a swipe at my allergic face. i took some pictures when i went to (insert one of the following here: [chicago, north shore, seattle, home]) recently.

hard-boiled eggs, Firefox RC-2 (the spell-checker is nice enough for me to write this post), and I’m back to the original optimoz extension (had strayed to all-in-one gestures for awhile, which in its defense is a smaller download) that lets you add new gestures and disable diagonal motions.
K & I asserted our dominance over the encroaching winter last night by rope-caulking some windows, shouting at each other (our favorite pastime), and shuffling plants and tables. tonight, it’s coffee shop time, with the outside chance of an REI trip. on the list: more wool, another hat, more lights, more fleecy items.
I’m trying to get together a list of photos to print for the frames i have yet to fill and hang. fungus amongus and this guy are two likely candidates.
