eugene: home of catherine, law school, old cars untouched by rust, and 20 dollar goodwill couches in excellent condition. sean and i drove out to florence on our first planned day of excitement. we bought bread, cheese, an avocado, nectarines and a large beer for lunch. we picked up some sunglasses at the dollar store and walked around on the windy beach.

on wednesday we hiked on the PCT near the ‘three sisters’ inside of a cloud. oregon’s finest coffee helped my fingers thaw on the way back. i’m definitely not planning a hike without rain gear. i might have died without catherine’s beautiful pink shell.

portland is an urban planner’s wet dream, according to sean. we enjoyed the numerous parks, free public transportation in the center of the city, and the inclusion of fish in mexican food on thursday. that night we walked around the open galleries to see the art on display.

i slept while sean avoided his book on the train to seattle. the people here are sitting on a gold mine. (sean’s aunt knows, but i informed her all the same). no screens needed to keep bugs out.

brice and i hitched a ride to the cascades and ended up car camping without a car (or raingear, silverware, salt, pepper, oil, matches (but we had lighters), flashlight (but we had an LED headlamp), or any synthetic clothing to speak of. we saw children that we chose to mistake for bears and spent the weekedn developing our aim to chase away pesky birds and chipmunks from our cheese-oriented food supply.

i’m now sitting in seattle’s public library. sexy yellow elevators and floral carpets that complete the landscaping outside are the two things that pop out first. the next thing that pops out is the book sitting next to me. i should be reading.
